TEACHING: MOVEMENT

This class develops the physical body as an instrument of movement, and fosters awareness of the origin and creation of movement. It rigorously conditions the body, and safely develops strength, flexibility, and agility. Course objectives include:

  • study and analyze the body, isolating each component of our anatomy, so as to reassemble the whole instrument with integrated awareness.
  • investigate movement and communication on stage before language arrives.
  • explore essential movement archetypes and techniques, including movement phrases influenced by Lecoq, Laban, Butoh, and Alexander.
  • interpret, understand, and identify with the movement of both the external world (outside our bodies: ie. animals, elements, etc.) and the internal world (inside our bodies: ie. emotions).
  • cultivate spatial awareness, and learn to move both as individuals and as a chorus.
  • apply an understanding of movement to the creation of character and story-telling on stage.

This course awakens the playful muscles and the inquisitive curiosity of both the body and the mind.
